JapanSet is the collective term for an older series of Japanese NewGRFs, which is the predecessor to the JP+ Project. JapanSet has not been in active development for about a decade, but some of its NewGRFs are still useful and recommended for a Japan themed OpenTTD game.
NewGRFs
Japanese Trains
The main train NewGRF of JapanSet. It has been almost entirely superseded by JP+ Engines & Wagons and JP+ Multiple Units. However, it contains a very small amount of trains and liveries that have not been reimplemented in JP+ yet.
Combining JP+ and Japanese Trains is possible, but not recommended as it will result in many duplicate vehicles.

Japanese Trains Add-on
A small add-on trainset, containing some trains from private companies. This has been superseded by JP+ Private Companies.
Japanese Stations
Since JP+ Stations does not exist yet, Japanese Stations is recommended as a passenger station set. It features animated platforms and modular station buildings.
There is also an unofficial extension set which adds matching tiles, called “Japanese Stations Add-ons”.

Japanese Buildings
Superseded by JP+ Buildings. Do not load both because it will result in duplicate buildings and break the growth mechanics.
Japanese Tracks
Superseded by JP+ Tracks. Do not load both because this uses too many railtype IDs, resulting in an error.
However, it remains compatible with the JP+ train sets in case you wish to use a smaller and simpler track set than JP+ Tracks.
Japanese Signals
This is a simple replacement NewGRF that changes the base game signals to Japanese-style ones. It should be loaded alongside JP+ Signal Extension, because the latter only adds new signals and does not replace the base game ones.

Japanese Landscape
This is a simple terrain replacement NewGRF. It is recommended if you want your game to have that nostalgic JapanSet feel. However, it does not offer a way to disable the gridlines.
A modern alternative is to use the “OpenGFX2 Classic” base graphic set, and set the grass colour to “Tropic” in the baseset parameters. This gives a similar terrain colour as the original but with a modern gridless appearance.

In the future, Japanese Landscape will be replaced by JP+ Landscape.
Japanese Trees
A simple tree replacement NewGRF. It is recommended if you want your game to have that nostalgic JapanSet feel.
Japanese Faces
A simple replacement NewGRF for the company manager faces, changing them to a simple anime style. A sleeker, more modern alternative is the “Anime Faces” NewGRF by Zephyris.
